An incredible display of light and textures found in this remote sandstone slot canyon. The various rich colors and hues present here are the result of how the eye, and the camera even more so, record reflections of direct light and different color temperatures onto the already colorful sandstone. I hiked a few miles out here alone four times before finally taking this shot the way I’d wanted it, just seconds before direct lighting spoils the scene from a position braced several feet off the ground against the opposing canyon walls.

Taken during a trip to Utah last November. I’ve always wanted to visit Bryce Canyon during winter when the weather is “bad”. The weather was indeed bad, and very cold. I spent the first day scouting and returned to the rim the next morning. The sun finally came out and the entire amphitheater was flooded with magic light.
Equipment: Canon 5D + EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM. 40mm 1/25sec at f/16, ISO400,Tripod.

The Narrows in Zion are truly phenomenal. After wading knee-deep in the beautiful Virgin River, we came upon this majestic location. Colorfully-carved 2,000 ft. sandstone walls surround me as I stand in disbelief. The canyon walls radiate in vibrant, warm hues and I was in position to capture a glorious scene.

In the middle of the day, once enough dust has been kicked up, shafts of light penetrate the slot canyons outside page, creating a striking visual against the brilliant red and purple sandstone.
