Old Orchard beach, Maine, has been a summer resort since 1837. It was named after an old apple orchard that once stood on high land above the long sand beach. The first records of this location date back to 1653. This image was made during the early morning hours that precede dawn. In April, the Milky Way rises in the early hours of the day so this photo was taken around 4:15am. Two frames were needed to capture the extreme dynamic range of the lit pier and dark sky, and blended in post-processing to balance exposure.
