Sand Dune Arch

by David Swindler

There are so many cool places in North Coyote Buttes besides The Wave. This is one such example. I like to call this the Sand Dune Arch. I asked my friend Lisa pose on top of the dune to give a good perspective of the size. It's so awesome having this stuff right in my own backyard! Photographed in Coyote Buttes, Utah.
Equipment: Canon 5D III, Canon 15mm Lens

My name is David Swindler and I'm an outdoor photography and travel enthusiast. After working for 10 years as a semiconductor engineer, I quit my job to follow my true passion. I'm now leading guided photography tours. I primarily do private tours in the Southwest from my base in Kanab, UT. My foray into photography was slow and steady. I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering and started work as a Process Engineer for Micron Technology. My specialty was photolithography, a high-tech process of nano-scale printing to form tiny circuitry on silicon chips. As I worked with the optics and exposure equipment, I began to see many parallels with photography. Thus, photography came very easy to me since I had a good background with the basic physics. When not at work, I loved to explore the great outdoors and I wanted to share this natural beauty with others. I also enjoy teaching others how to improve their photography and there's no better way to do it than practicing the techniques out in the field.

Utah seems to be a “must see” place.

Wow, the figure is really essential to get an idea of the scale. Magnificent David

Looks just like a gigantic sand wave curl! I love the very long shadow and the superb composition as well. Great job, David.

Utah really is a must see place, and this picture proves it. Great shot, love the colors and the sun barely breaking through.

Very, very nice. Having your friend pose on the dune adds a lot to the shot, in addition to simply giving perspective. Thanks.

Excellent. Be careful, now that you made this place known, every photo nerd will be going there to make similar images.

Cool find. I have been to both North and South Coyote Buttes several times, but haven’t seen this one yet. Although, I guess the fisheye lens makes it look a little different than in real life?

What an amazing shot, it looks like the arch is made of sand, it reminds me of a Star Wars set.
