Hollow But Not Empty
by Christian Dalbec
I've been dreaming of this shot for almost a year before this February 10th. A friend and I woke up early to meet at 4am for a 2.5 hour drive up the North Shore of Lake Superior to our destination "Hollow Rock". A small island not 50 feet off shore that has a large hole right through the width of it. I took my wetsuit and camera housing and swam out and through making many different images. This is one I liked as the sun was coming up and illuminating the hollowness.
Not to mention air temperature was -12°f water was 33°f.
Above water shots had to be quick as the lens port would start to freeze over.
Photographed in Hollow Rock Grand Portage Minnesota.
Equipment: Nikon d800e, Rokinin 14mm, aquatech housing
Though I've just only begun my journey into photography a few years ago, it seems I've always seen the still frames my entire life. I've always thought to myself "if I only had a camera" I'd catch that. I now practice photography on a daily basis and make a living with this practice. I really love sharing with the world. I even begun shorebreak photography with an enclosed dslr. It seems the sky is the limit and there will always be beautiful subjects out there.
I love what I do.
