Abraham Lake Aurora

by David Swindler

We had a great time photographing the ice bubbles on Abraham Lake last week. Unfortunately, a snow storm covered most of the ice the day before we arrived but we managed to find a small patch of clear ice near Windy Point. We had been looking for the aurora this evening since the forecast had looked promising. After a couple of hours, the lights began to appear! Photographed in Nordegg, Alberta.
Equipment: Canon 5D III, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8

My name is David Swindler and I'm an outdoor photographer and travel enthusiast. After working for 10 years as a semiconductor engineer, I quit my job to follow my true passion. I'm now leading guided photography tours . I primarily do private tours in the Southwest from my base in Kanab, UT. My foray into photography was slow and steady. I graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering and started work as a Process Engineer for Micron Technology. My specialty was photolithography, a high-tech process of nano-scale printing to form tiny circuitry on silicon chips. As I worked with the optics and exposure equipment, I began to see many parallels with photography. Thus, photography came very easy to me since I had a good background with the basic physics. When not at work, I loved to explore the great outdoors and I wanted to share this natural beauty with others. I also enjoy teaching others how to improve their photography and there's no better way to do it than practicing the techniques out in the field.

Great image! What contrasts. One question – how come a Nikon lens on a canon 5d3??

Thanks everyone! The Nikon 14-24mm lens is one of the best lenses ever made for night photography. I couldn’t find any Canon glass that could rival it, so I’ve stuck with using the Nikon on my Canon bodies.

Dramatic colour contrast, looks almost unreal.
