Proud Rhino

by Morkel Erasmus

A critically endangered Black Rhino bull shows his dominance by kicking up dust and assuming a challenging pose. With more than 550 rhinos brutally poached in Southern Africa in 2013 alone (more than 2000 killed since 2010) the future is looking bleak for these behemoths, all because of flawed beliefs of the medicinal properties of their horns. Rhino horn IS NOT MEDICINE! More info on

I have always been amazed by the natural beauty in the landscape, wildlife and bird-life of Southern Africa. Picking up a camera has just enhanced that appreciation and pushed me to further explore the wild places left in my native homeland. Join me on my website/blog, on Facebook and on 500px as I share my experiences with you! An Industrial Engineer by profession, and an accomplished artist across many genres, from music to poetry, I have always enjoyed whatever allows me to express my creativity to the fullest. Photography turned out to be the perfect 'marriage' between my engineering brain and artistic soul. Showing off God's glorious creation is something I enjoy immensely. What a mighty beast. Let’s hope that something can be done before it’s too late. Zoos are not the place to see them.

Sad to see rhinos get poached also! Such ashame we can’t learn to live peacefully and let them alone! Nice pic of this rhino!

It’s not only for folk medicine the Rhino is killed for the horn. In Yemen, at 14, as a rite of passage, a young boy may receive a Janbiya or curved dagger with a coveted Rhino horn handle as a rite of passage. Just another nail in the Rhino’s coffin, so to speak. Many different attitudes, customs, and beliefs need to change around the world if this magnificent animal is to be saved.

Excellent image portraying a proud animal, we have got to do more to stop poaching!

Thanks for sreading the word. Heartbreaking slaughter of one of the most magnificant creatures ever. Keep up the good work. Someday maybe it will help, hopefully not too late. I would ask where this was taken but the less info that goes out over the inernet the better. Protect them.

He’s gorgeous – and it is so sad what is being done to them. Thanks for bringing this to light with your marvelous photo.
