Delicate Arch Milky Way

by David Swindler

It took some persistence to get this shot as it was cloudy the previous two mornings. You can see some clouds on the right side of the image, but fortunately they didn't move in until about 30 mins later. I light painted the arch with a large spotlight standing to the left of the camera.
Equipment: Canon 5D III, 15mm Fisheye

Congrats on POD – absolutely mesmerizing. I visited Arches NP about 20 years ago and fell in love with the place. Thanks for this shot – it brings back wonderful memories for me!

Splendid photo. I would have preferred slightly milder light painting of the arch. Otherwise, this is excellent.

Splendid, David! Keep getting out with your camera as often
as possible.

This is certainly not an amateur photo! Love the detail and the ‘mood’…Love this photo…Congrats!

Technique, composition, contrast, … all good. But the way I judge a picture is how much it inspires me to visit the place where it was captured. 15 out of 10. Thank you!

Wonderful picture David. I first visited Delicate Arch about five years ago and am returning in a couple of weeks to try to capture some sunset/night shots. I also have a 5D Mk III but the shots I took previously (with a Canon 7D) resulted in few of the smaller stars and the pinpoints of light turned into ‘dashes’ with exposures longer than 25 secs or so.

What sort of settings do you use? What ISO do you find you can push the 5D Mk III to? Are you using a very fast lens or multiple ‘stacked’ shots?

Thanks for the inspiration,
