Rising Malachite Kingfisher

by Mark Dumbleton

Spending years in a bird hide, waiting for that perfect moment when opportunity, skill and luck meet, resulted in a moment I am very proud of. I have tried to capture a "natural (non-baited)" photograph of a Malachite Kingfisher rising out of the water for many years, and finally my patience and dedication paid of with this image. A special moment in time on my photographic journey across Africa.
Equipment: Nikon D700, Nikon 600 f4 VR
Mark Dumbleton
I am a wildlife and landscape photographer based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Born with a passion for the outdoors, I travel through Africa photographing the events and nuances of the natural world. Evoking an emotion through photographic art stems from a life-long passion for the wilderness. Capturing the unique beauty of a location and it's wildlife motivates me to invest as much time as I do out in the wilderness, focussing on nothing more than creating a photograph with enough emotion and visual drama to tell a story; to justify to the viewer the immense beauty of that experience. The photographs on this website portray my passion for this, in a way that is both creative and natural, sometimes pushing the ethical boundaries to obtain that unique perspective on our natural world.

Not only is the Kingfisher in motion, but also the water below. Beautiful capture. I love how it shows the water dripping of the bird. I also love it that the water really looks like water.

OMG, what an amazing shot!! The kingfisher, a stunning bird, caught mid flight, the droplets of water, he’s facing you with something in his beak, isolated from the non intrusive background… Incredible!! Congrats!

This is absolutely stunning! So glad to know that it’s a ‘true natural’.

By “sometimes pushing the ethical boundaries to obtain that unique perspective on our natural world” …does this mean that sometimes you do bait?
