Life and Death
by Isak Pretorius
The unique textures and colors found on the salt and clay pans amongst the dunes in Southern Namibia is a constant source of inspiration. The Tsauchab river cuts into the dunes and every 10 years pushes in enough water to feed the dry pans with a little water. The constant moving dunes had cut off Deadvlei pan from this water source and it now only get water from rare local rains. I wanted to capture the feeling of lifelessness of Deadvlei, which at one point supported a number of trees. I found a water runoff pattern on the pan that resembled a tree, symbolizing an era that had passed.
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark 2, Canon 16-35mm

Born and raised in South Africa I have always had a love for the natural world. I live and work in South Africa which is such a privilege to be close to so many natural wonders. I try to get away to explore the natural beauty of my continent as much as I can. Today I'm lucky to spend a lot of time in the bush working as a photographic guide.
