A Flick of the Tail
by David Lloyd
I waited for a little time for this giraffe to flick out his tail appropriately all the while keeping an eye on the one on the horizon from within the viewfinder. I'm sure it wasn't a long wait for the tail flick, but it did seem like an age while holding up the heavy lens.
It was a privilege to see this grace the cover of this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year portfolio. After twenty years of collecting and admiring the books, I now find that I’m on one. Needless to say, I was quite delighted.

From a trick of the tail to a flick of the tail and therein lies the tale. Great photo!

Lovely and somehow refreshing, I love the detail of her(his?) hind legs, the gentle curves, and the undulation of muscle beneath the skin is pronounced by the patchwork pattern on the Giraffe’s skin. Congrats on the cover win.
