Manarola at Dusk

by Paul Hogie

I loved the charm of the little fishing villages on the northern coast of Italy. These towns on the Cinque Terre are today filled with tourists but this cannot distract from the beauty and spectacle of small towns perched in the cliff edges. The town of Manarola has a wonderful harbour where many, despite the large waves, were swimming in the harbour and being washed up on the rocks. I waited several hours on my vantage point until the light was just right and captured this images which shows the pastel colours of the buildings, the deep colour of the sea, the waves crashing on the rocks, the local fishermen having a party on the dock and the deep night sky just before it turns black. I now have an enduring image to keep my memories of this enchanted place alive.

Photographer for over 30 years. Early on this was capturing motor sport events, then the inevitable weddings and portraits but for the most part is has been travel images. In many travels I have focused on faithful capture of iconic scenes with an extra dimension, typically by looking for unusual lighting, a night photograph or by highlighting aspects of compelling interest.

Paul, Your magnificent image takes be back to 1994 when I discovered the Cinque Terre for the first time. I was spellboaud looking down on this storybook place. You could hear the people laughing from far away! Very unusual spot. Thank you. Love the crashing waves!

Great photo. Too bad such a great tragedy has challenged two other Cinque Terre towns with the horrible floods and landslides in October,2011. They are struggling to return to their previous splendor. Check out Rick Steves website for before and after photos. Keep all your Cinque Terre shots… they may be historic.

All I can say is it’s lovely and your patience waiting for the right light was worth it.
Hard and soft textures combing the colors make it magnificent.
I love to stay in a room hig on the hill with the view of the sea.
Well done!!
