When Nature Wins

by Robert Beideman

This area of the Central Highlands in Iceland was used to create a number of reservoirs to provide water to the people of Iceland. Since the rock into which the reservoirs were created is porous, volcanic rock...the water began to find it's own way back toward it's natural course toward the ocean. This place has no fewer than 40 discrete waterfalls pouring directly out of the face of the canyon walls...and it is absolutely magic. Nature wins...again.

All too often, we're surrounded by the day-to-day of our daily lives. Hopefully...at least once in a while...we each escape this to reconnect with the real world that we live in...the world of mountains, oceans, fire, and fresh air. And, even more rarely, these escapes lead us to a moment...a particular place and time...where the majesty of the natural world around us comes together in a way that leaves us completely awestruck. If, at those moments, we're fortunate enough to have a camera with us...it's most common to come away with images of that moment that scarcely reflect the magnitude of what was actually seen with our own eyes. We certainly try...but the images typically captured are but pointers for the brain to remember what was experienced in vivid color...and such images are only useful to those who have actually lived the particular experience. I strive to capture images that can convey such intense moments of beauty to those who hadn't the chance to experience the particular place and time themselves. As is usual, I’m a work in progress...but...aren't we all? G+: http://plus.google.com/107555775204015275919/posts Robert Beideman

This is a very nice composition. I love the play of light on the rocks in the foreground, and how it contrasts with the shadowed edges of the cliff face. The water is such a remarkable blue that it perfectly compliments the warm tones of the sunlit rocks. As beautiful as this photograph is, to have seen it in person must have been breathtaking.
