I initially thought this photo to be unbelievable until I read your explanation on Flickr. The title is apt. For your information, and for other fans of “Dune”, Frank Herbert originally published the story in Analog Science Fiction Magazine in three episodes back in 1963. My copies of these magazines are now lost. What if… heavy sigh. Anyway, great photo, and inspirational title.

Thank you!

here you are a few details about this shot:

These are snow dunes.?
Night shot, taken at Lake Agnel (2,300 m) in the Gran Paradiso National Park (Italy).
I reached this place hiking for 15 km with snow shoes, then I’ve mounted my tent for the night.

This image has a dual lighting:
front above – the moon
from the right – a beacon of lake Agnel dam

This side lighting also generated, on the left, the shadow of me plus my camera on tripod while taking the photo… I initially saw this as a disturbing element, but then I thought “why not?!”
At the very least this provides a little connection to reality in a landscape that seems actually taken from another planet.
The shades in pink are the result of the encounter with the orange color of the beacon with the white light of the moon.
By the way, the little dot on the right of the moon is planet Jupiter.

Best greetings!

Surreale e inquietante: c’è un pianeta nell’universo e chi fotografa è un Ufo…fantastica foto!

Love this photo!

This is exactly what I pictured Dune to look like when I read the books, still my favourite Sci-Fi event.

Remarkable photo-as if from another planet, just wonderful!

Exceptional photo. Simplicity with complex lighting. Very well seen AND captured. And I love that you left your tiny peice of shadow of yourself in there.

Cool (both literally and figuratively) capture Roberto. Even though they are snow dunes my mind went right away to the Christmas cards you often see where the 3 wise men are traveling to see the baby Jesus. I think the star effect filter has something to do with that too. Thanks for sharing.

very very nice

@ Bill Bentley:
no “star filter effect” were applied, what you see is fully natural: the full moon shot at aperture f/16.
That’s it :-)
The full moon is truly a significant source of light at night, that’s why I’ve used a middle/narrow aperture, in order to get its light as a “star” and not as an indefinite halo.
I am truly glad you’ve foud a glimpse of the Christmas spirit in this shot!
Best whishes.

Thank you very much to you all, for your comments and appreciations!
All the photos I shot in high mountain are the result of much effort, both mental and physical, and I am really happy when I realize that I can share the simple magic beauty, somehow “otherworldly”, of certain places I have the fortune to visit.

The fact is that the world is wonderful!… beyond any imagination, indeed it never ceases to amaze… and it’s only “out there”, ready first of all to be contemplated and, well, yes, also photographed :-)

Best wishes to you all

Yes, that “out there” is truly wonderful, wherever you look. I have a lot of beautiful shots all taken within 10 metres of my house ( in Ireland). Why is it so good? Somebody good must have put it there. and given us the eyes & appreciation to enjoy it.

A memorable image – so inspiring. And yes, my first thought especially at this time of year was of the Star announcing the birth of Christ. A gorgeous shot on so many levels!
