Holy Island Moon

by Karen Atkinson

As I squinted into the distance (must get my glasses fixed;) and wondered what that faint orange glow was in the distance, suddenly there was no doubt - a waning Gibbous of a fat moon, illuminating the causeway at Holy Island last night before the clouds devoured it up. What a fine birthday surprise - it made up for having been pebbledashed with sand and sea earlier at Bamburgh after trying to get closer to a bobbing seal...! Never to be forgotten.

Exceptional moon photographs are rare and elusive, but this shot is both beautiful and evocative. Nicely done.

Lovely color and perfect density in both highlights and the shadows (detail in moon is great). Fantastic sharpness. The blue of the water is lovely and the color of the moon beautiful. Composition could be stronger if it had been shot or cropped with the moon not so dead centered and the horizon line not cutting the photo in half. Application of rule of thirds would have made for a stronger composition. YES I know rules are made to be broken, but crop based on rule of 3rd’s and compare the composition side by side with this one and the revised composition will be stronger and have greater appeal.
