Blue Hen Falls In Autumn

by Steve Perry

This is one I’ve been trying to bag for awhile – since my film days in fact! See, each time I’d stop to shoot the falls (usually in autumn), I’d end up with VERY little water flow. Instead of the nice robust waterfall you see here, I would typically end up with a little stringy drip about 1/4 the size. It was for that reason I almost didn’t stop. This was actually taken on my way back from a quick waterfall shoot in NY. It was raining, I was tired, and based on my past luck, well, I didn’t think it was even worth the attempt. However, it was only about a 20 mile diversion, and I did have the time. I finally talked myself into it, thinking if it sucked, I’d just turn around and hike right back up to the car. Well, you can imagine how quickly my attitude changed when I hit the bridge above the falls and saw more water than I ever had before rushing under it! I shot every angle I could come up with, sometimes standing in the creek (talk about cold feet!), sometimes in the pouring rain, but after two exhilarating hours, I felt like I had finally conquered Blue Hen Falls! Out of all the shots I captured that day, this was my favorite. (And yes, I was ankle deep in the ice cold water. :)

Beautiful ! The colors really “POP”. Great cotrast and composition.

I hope this comments gets posted. I left a comment on yesterdays “Lavender” photo only to find out it was either removed or not posted at all. While, it wasn’t as postive as some of the others, it was honest and I thought that’s what this section of the site was about.

Beautiful Steve – great contrast between the leave and rock, and just the right amount of softness to the water.

You’ve captured perfectly the beauty and serenity of the falls. I’ve tried many times to get a great photo of Blue Hen Falls, but you really did it. The Cuyahoga National Park has so many beautiful places. Thanks for sharing!

Talk about the perfect composition here. The waterfall is placed perfectly and the water comes at the viewer from all angles and really draws the viewer in.
