Mahfuzul Hasan Bhuiyan
I was born in Bangladesh and by profession I’m an Architect. I have started loving Photography since 1992, when I saw some master’s work and I realize this is my world. I am self taught, I learned photography by reading, experimenting and making mistakes. Unavailability of Film in my Home country, In 2007 I started working in digital and it was this new technology that helped transform me from a photographer and into an artist. After a lot of thinking and struggling, I concluded that what I really wanted to do was create images with life, not capture photographs. I have continued to explore many different subjects and styles as my vision constantly changes. So after much hard work, and with a change in my thinking, I transformed myself into an artist. Early on in my career people would tell me to pick just one thing, focus on it and become known for it. Some suggested that I should choose landscapes and stick with that. However that advice never rang true for me, I did not want choose one thing and I believe that you must do what you love or you’ll never be successful. I like to focus on my subject and my vision, not on my equipment or the processes. So I shoot simple and light, carrying just what I need . I work alone, I cannot relax if someone is with me and I feel like I’m holding them up, even other photographers or my family! And I must not have any other commitments for that day because I do not want to feel rushed or have to quite at a certain time. I cannot be creative if there are any distractions or constraints on me.

I first came across Betel Nut while working in Timor Leste.
The locals dry it out and them use it as a stimulant.

It’s first wrapped in a vine leaf along with some chalk. You then pop it to the side of your mouth and chew it slowly for 30 mins or so – that’s if you can stand to do it for so long, it’s an acquired taste for sure! But you do get a little buzz from it. One drawback is that it makes you salivate like mad and you can’t help but spit out what feels like a litre of saliva every 5 mins. Oh yeah, it also turns your teeth red if you chew it frequently.

Nice picture, brings back some nice memories.

Beautiful, yet disturbing (to me) photo with great effects. I’m afraid of heights and I’m very impressionable. I keep thinking, “Get-down before you hurt yourself.” It must be a good photo since it evokes strong reaction.

This awesome picture illustrates how hard the work is collecting these betel nuts. The sheer hight, emphasized by the perspective, gives me a chill each time I look at the picture. Superbly done!
