Sierra Twilight

by Harry Lichtman

My first trip to the Sierra backcountry opened my eyes to all of the photographic possibilities there. It's no wonder that photographers gravitate to these mountains for inspiration. On this evening, rain and hail cleared out just in time as the sun set. This single exposure was made after sunset using a 20 second exposure. I had found this section of lake earlier in the afternoon which seemed protected from the wind. Should the light return after the storms, my plan was to head to this area. Luckily, things worked out on this evening.
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 17-40L

Really beautiful light. It is really nice to see such a soft touch on an image these days. Makes you want to kick back and just enjoy the show.

Great image Harry. Really amazing because I was at this exact spot last weekend – Dusy Basin under the Palisades.

Just purchased the 17-40 for my 5D MKII, so can’t get enough of these piccies at the moment. A great image that holds a lot of expectations for me.

Thanks for the views and comments.

Russ – We nearly crossed paths! I flew back last Sunday to NH.
Jim – Thanks for the comment – Very easy and tempting to crank up sat. these days, but I prefer the more subtle approach.

Very Nicely Done. I love it when the world goes pink like that. It is those still moment right after crazy weather that create such beauty. Nicely captured.

This is a wonderful shot. It’s remarkable that a 20-second exposure can turn out such a still and reflective lake surface. Where in the Sierra were you? And thank you for sharing!

Is this the famous Dusy Basin?
