Maligne Canyon

by Rob Dweck

An overcast day proved to be the perfect weather for the easy stroll through Maligne Canyon that resulted in this photo. The diffused light combined with my 10 stop neutral density filter allowed for a 141 second exposure that blurred the emerald green water of the Maligne River to a silky flow.
Equipment: Canon 5DmkII, Canon EF17-40 f4L, B+W 10 stop ND filter

My fascination with photography began as a teenager when I received Yoshikazu Shirakawa’s book Eternal America as a gift. The photographs in that book made a lasting impression on me, and years later inspired my first trip West to see the great American landscapes and wilderness firsthand. I was so taken with the grandeur and beauty that I returned annually until I moved permanently to California in 2000. I spent much of my spare time hiking the parks and wilderness of California and the Southwest and soon began photographing my journeys. Inspired by the work of Galen Rowell, Art Wolfe and other landscape masters, I set out with my camera to capture the beauty and wonder that I experienced in my travels. My photographs have since appeared in calendars, Digital Photo Magazine, Backpacker Magazine and have won several awards including second prize in the 2009 Ansel Adams Gallery Photo Contest and the California State Parks Foundation 2010 Photo of the year.

Rob–I love it. That emaralsd green is so rich-with a matte look too.
And the rocks are so intense-amazing .
Congratulations Rob !!

What a beautiful photo–this is the third or fourth time I’ve seen a photographer mention using a neutral density filter. What an incredible effect. Thanks for sharing information on how you captured the shot.
