Havasu falls

by Bjorn Billing

The colorful rock of Grand Canyon, Arizona, and the turquoise water that runs through Supai, homeland of the Havasupai tribe. There are several waterfalls here – like jewels in a red shrine, glowing in the evening light. It was quite windy that night in August. Pre-monsoon weather. Thunder echoed between the rock walls and there were occasional rain showers. I knew this moment wouldn't last for long, and the twenty seconds of exposure felt like an eternity. A few minutes later the last rays of sun were gone.
Equipment: Canon EOS 5D mk II, 16-25/2,8

I lived in Arizona for 20 years, and have recently moved to an area with green and trees, but I have never forgotten the beauty that the state holds and rare treasures such as this. Beautiful picture…you captured Arizona perfectly!

I have seen many good pictures of these Falls, but have not been there…yet. This is a most fantastic shot, no others have been with clouds, beautifully caught and a brilliant shot!

It’s unfortunate that the 20 second exposure that smoothed the falling water also gave the clouds a distracting motion blur.

18th October 2011 at 5:23 pm

That is spectacular. The colors are wonderful and the story is great!

Another incredible Earth Shots photo–I spent years working as a guide in the Grand Canyon and the light in this photograph perfectly captures the mood of the canyon and its intense summer storms.
