Above

by Paul Tixier

At first I thought this was one of the numerous bad shots in which birds appear unexpectedly in the frame. I eventually changed my mind thinking that the picture gives us an interesting perspective, with an idea of how albatrosses see the orcas from above! Well, obviously the one on the water seems a little surprised...

Born in France, I've spent several years in British Columbia for a MSc on killer whales, and I'm now working on killer whales of the Crozet archipelago (Southern Ocean) as a PhD student. I started photography as a teenager and it has quickly become for me the best way to tell stories about the amazing wild encounters I had in these beautiful and remote places of the world

What an amazing photo. The exact moment to record a sight rarely ,if ever, caught in a still shot.
WOW-That is wonderful!! Congratulations Paul.

I love this point of view – feels like BirdCam… maybe you could sell the idea onto the Burrard Lucas brothers as a new take on BeetleCam!

Paul I have been trying to figure the object next to or above the white seagull. Another Albatross or a part of the orca. Where were you when you took the shot? Quite a capture by the way.

A case of being in the right place at the right time, or the other way around for the bird! lol Great shot, have loads of action going on in it.

Jim, I think what you are seeing above the white seagull (the one in the water) is it’s black wings.
