Explosive Sunrise

by Brett Nickeson

Photographers live, die, and do some pretty crazy things in between for amazing light. In the end, it's scenes like this that make it all worth it. This image was taken at Reflection Lake in Mount Rainier National Park. Not only does the mountain have a lenticular cloud over it, the wind profile around the mountain created a spectacular cloud structure, similar to updrafts in large thunderstorms found in the Midwest. I will consider myself lucky if I am ever witness to a scene that can top this.
Equipment: Canon 7D, Tokina 11-16mm

Tremendous job of capturing the multiple elements with the highlight on the layered clouds. Great pic!

Beyond breathtaking! As for luck, as the Pennsylvania Dutch purportedly say ‘the harder you work, the luckier you are.’ Your skills and ability delivered the image after serendipity assisted you in the staging.

Perfect title. I lived across the water from this mountain for years, saw some awesome sights but none to top this one.

Can’t remember ever seeing a picture of Rainier w/o the mountain dominating the picture….you’ve put the mountain in 2nd place to the sky! Just gorgeous!

These are lenticular clouds, which form only over mountains. cf. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=clouds+that+form+over+mountains&id=673538FF5D7AB8D55BE234CD38D4E37390097FF4&FORM=IGRE3
