Deadly Beauty (Veratrum album)

by Deadly Beauty (Veratrum album) by Robin Black

Corn Lilies (also called False Hellebore) can be found in marshy mountain meadows in spring and summer, their wide, curling green leaves growing together in tight colonies. While the plant has been useful in cancer research, it is deadly if consumed--as little as a half a gram ingested can be fatal. According to Wikipedia, Native Americans used the juice pressed from the roots of this plant to poison arrows before combat.
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II

Interesting contrast between the beauty of the image and the information shared about the subject. Amazing stuff-I’ve been avoiding water for all these years based on Fields’ advice and now I have to expand my horizons.

I really like the image, the way it drew me in, the delicate colours and the blending of the leaves.
It is amazing how something so beautiful, and yet harmless looking, can be so deadly. Great shot!!!

Beautiful photo: beautiful plant. Thank you for including plant information too. I often wonder how humans around the world determined what plants are lethal to humans. I guess they had their own kind of “clinical trials.”

Excellent cropping to bring out the wonderful light and patterns. I also appreciate the info. Congratulations on POTD!

Nice to know about the dangers of these plants – I’ve seen and even photographed them myself in the Mount Rainier national park. Beautiful shot!
