Ash and Warmth

by Erik Harrison

The first time I get the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon there are 5 wildfires burning in and near the North Rim. Though a little disappointed about the smokey air I made do and honestly was quite happy for the light the smoke created on two separate evenings out at Cape Royal.
Equipment: 7D 10-22mm Reverse GND

I've been shooting landscapes, and creating fine art works for about 17 years. I'm absolutely amazed every time an image comes up in the developer or out of the RAW converter! It feels like being a kid getting a present every time!

Just Amazing! The color allures you in and the depth takes you away.

I love the Grand Canyon and this brought out the beauty!!!!!!!!!!! and the smoke! Wow
I live in Monument Valley and the smoke is driving out this direction. In the morning and evening I see the dark colors of the sky! It’s amazing =)

It’s great that you went with less than optimum conditions and still made beautiful art. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes disaster creates beauty and you’ve captured it here. Great job – I love the warmth on one side and coolness on the other. It’s almost good vs evil.

Beautiful light and colors! What stops this image from being perfect is how the mountain range is level with the horizon, giving the illusion that there is less dof. It looks a bit squeezed. Composing a little higher or lower would have done the trick. Happy shooting!

The colours, the colours, the colours ! What will you do with ‘perfect’ conditions, Erik??

19th September 2011 at 10:03 pm

Marvelous detail, POV, light and color. In spite of not ideal circumstances, you have more than made the best of it, and come away with a very special shot.

Absolutely stunning! I lived and worked on the North Rim of the Grand for about 10 years and I’ve only seen a few landscapes that match the perfection of your image. Nice work.
