Grand View Point

by Phill Monson

In my humble opinion, Canyonlands NP does not get the love it deserves. Possibly due to the remoteness of it, and not as many recognizable landmarks as the easily accessible Arches NP, but who can pass up a view like this? It's about a 45 minute drive from Moab to here, and to catch the sunrise, that means getting up at 4:30am- oh the glory of taking landscape photos. Usually when I go to these parks I get less-than spectacular skies, but with the Monsoon season in full force in Southern Utah, this morning didn't disappoint. Thanks for looking!

First time I ever left a message. been viewing photo of day (on my home page) for over 10 years. I, too love to get the “road less traveled shot” Meaning it takes creativity, work, insight and is my passion. Thank you for sharing a beautiful moment that will never happen again.

As eloquent as your words are about Canyonlands National Park, your photo is even more so.

I am in total agreement with you — I resently had a really good photo-trip to Canyonlands Nat. Park.. I holed up at “Dead Horse Point Campground”… Your image here is Really Great.

It’s a pity you put the horizon just in the middle of the image….. Could be much stronger with horizon at 1/3 or 2/3 ….

I love the crack in the ground, it looks like it belongs to another planet; very beautiful.

Beatiful light in a beatiful NP. Was there a few weeks ago and was astonished bij the sight of it. Didn’t have such a great sky though. Agree with Paul about the horizon. Thanks fot sharing.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you for posting this. Moab UT area is one of my favorite places in the US (Signal Hill in the Grand Tetons is first, DHPP is very close 2nd). @James R. Kyle, SO jealous you camped at DHPP – that is the BEST in the Moab area.

@ Paul Van Cauteren – Thanks for the feedback. While I can appreciate your opinion on the shot, Grand View Point is a particular location that really lends itself to this type of composition. You can find that other photographers such as George H. H. Huey and even Michael Fatali have composed this location with the Horizon as such. I could have positioned it differently I suppose, but it would have taken away from the sky which is a large part of the photo. Besides that, EarthShots thought it was good enough so I will take it. Thanks- PM

I didn’t even notice the horizon being in the middle until I read Paul’s take on it. I think you needed that much of the sky to capture the full impact of what was going on up there and, considering the magnificence of the canyon, I don’t think there is any danger of it overpowering. Awesome pic!

I haven’t even hear of canyonlands until just recently. I would love to take a trip to this area and hike around. I bet there are photo ops that no one has discovered yet!

Some of the most amazing, abstract looking pics I’ve ever seen came out of there

Marvelous! Thanks for bringing our attention so deservedly to this unique and beautiful place. And although it is most often preferred to not have a horizon at center, I like this composition and the balance between the canyons and the glorious sky – it works!

I’ve seen many Canyonlands images–never get tired of that landscape. I like the look of the eroded mesa top–the colors are perfect and expressive. I’m planning on heading out to the Canyonlands in a few weekends–hope the skies are as nice. Thanks.
