Stands in Silence
by Scott Smorra
As the sun rises behind Mt Hood, Oregon, a perfect pyramid shaped shadow is cast upon the surrounding landscape. I climbed Hood in mid June with a few friends and we made it to the summit just after sunrise. This is one of my favorite images from the climb.
Photography was not my primary goal on this trip (making it to the top and back down safely was my goal) but I was pleasantly surprised by the good light on the summit. Hauling dSLR gear up the mountain didn't make climbing any easier, but I was glad I brought everything along.
Equipment: Nikon D7000, 12-24mm Nikkor Dx, polarizer, tripod

Amazing shot!! Great contrast in colors…beautifully captured. We have a similar phenomena in sri lanka, where you can see this kind of perfect triangle shaped shadow cast by the rising sun over Adam’s Peak (a 7,359 ft tall mountain located in central Sri Lanka). Congrats on your lovely shot!

Just when you think you have seen every angle possible of that mountain, someone manages to do it different again. Great Work!!!!

Beatiful.
Congratulations

Very interesting. I love how the pinnacle of the deep blue triangle touches the horizon.
The color of the darker blue “mountain” against the layers of deepening mauves is also a treat.
Perfect timing here.

I love this perfectly framed and composed shadow shot! Exceptionally unique perspective and soft muted colours. Super Fine image!
Congratulations for this well deserved spot as POTD!

Beautiful shot. I have seen shadows like this from Indonesian volcanos, but never from our Pacific Northwest mountains!

Glad you endured the trip to the top with the gear for the rest of us! Extremely nice. Been around the base a few times during trips out there but never up very far.

I recognized the shadow Mt Hood makes and have seen this shot attempted before but yours is the best. I love it when Oregon is featured so beautifully. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve been to Mt Hood the snowboard, and the view is awesome. You can see for miles around and you really do feel like your ontop of the world. Great job. Love the shadow.
