Mauna Kea Star Trails

by Andreas Koeberl

This is a picture that was taken during approximately 1.5 hours on Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawaii. In the foreground, you can see the Canada France Hawaii Telescope. On Mauna Kea, nights are amazingly clear and dark.
Equipment: Nikon D7000, Nikon 16-85, Tripod

What an amazing photo! Talk about looking at something conventional and sharing it in an unconventional way. Very memorable and awe inspiring.

I don’t feel much envy overall, but I think I may envy your devotion to star trails. Your enjoyment comes through and has been passed on.

This is one of the most beautiful shots I’ve ever seen.

Very cool, it’s like we are observing the perspective of a giant eye (telescope) staring straight down the barrel of a wormhole. Superb work, well arranged!

superb, I love the way that it centres itself just over the observatory.

What remarkable foresight this shows!!!! You were looking at the sky into the future. Amazingly unique perspective to take.

Thank you Andreas and Earth Shots for taking and making available your superb star trails.
I am learning much from others techniques that capture a small slice of time.

Congratulations, this is just excellent. Makes me think… “if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion” I think I’ve got the spins really!

Great photo! I once did a star trail photo in Joshua Tree, CA for an astronomy class in collage. It had white dots going across the photo vertically…stupid airplane!

Thanks Andreas! Absolutely fantastic, like Vincent Van Gogh’s Stary Night famous painting!
You definately have a gift!
How did you keep the wind from blurring the building at such a long exposure time?

Never been up there at night but this might encourage me! Very well conceived and executed.
