Ice Forms

by Jim Griggs

High winds and rapidly dropping temperatures whipped these interesting ice formations onto the tree trunks in a local lake, already flooded by heavier than normal December rains. I was out photographing wildlife in the flint hills and tall grass prairie in east central Kansas and found these formations to be truly amazing.

What a wonderful if slightly scary image–the ice looks like it has been sculpted and shaped to the tree trunks. Stunning contrasts and a marvelous photo!

Fascinating image Jim. As others have said it first reminded me of horses hooves.

I truly enjoy this photo, especially since it has been so hot here in Michigan the past few weeks. I like the formation of the ice, looks almost like the fur of Clydesdale’s feet.

This is quite lovely. I personally would like more of the trees in focus or intentionally blurred to emphasize the front tree. But I like the gentle diagonal composition and ‘seeing’ of this unique formation!
