Sand Waves

by Ivan Sohrakoff

This was taken on the only evening I spent in the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The wind was extremely strong at this point, but the setting sun made amazing highlights on the layered dunes. I decided to take my chances and point my camera in the direction of the wind. The sand was flying off the tops of the dunes making the light soft in every way, but also coming right at my face and lens. I quickly turned and fired a few shots, but got sand in my eyes. I spent the next ten minutes attempting to rid the sand from my eye! Oh, what we do for a good photo opportunity! Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 100-400L @400mm, 1/25 second exposure @ F8, B+W CP filter, This is one single image @ ISO 50
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 100-400L, B+W CP filter

It’s a very brave man that risks his gear for the sake of an image no matter how good it is. Hopefully you can earn enough from this image to cover any costs should you have damaged the 5DMKII. I use the same camera, and even though it is weather sealed I doubt I would have even dared take it from my bag, and living on the coast I sometimes come up against similar conditions quite regularly. A very nice image though.

This great composition, combined with a perfect exposure, and of course the simple but fantastic scenery, makes this shot an EXTREME BEAUTY.

There is something altogether amazing about the desert whether it is in the SW, here in Eastern Oregon or in the outback of Australia.
It is beautiful

My camera was not so fortunate. It was put to rest after taking pictures at the Great Sand Dunes but it was totally worth getting those pictures, it is beautiful!
