Gorilla Breakfast
by Mitchell Krog
Towards the end of 2010 my wife and I did a 21 day journey through Africa. One of our stops was Rwanda where we spent 4 days trekking the mountainsides to spend one precious hour a day with these magnificent beings. Depending on how long you trek through the forests you can either arrive to a family of Gorilla's having breakfast, playtime or siesta. This particular family called Hirwa meaning "Lucky" is comprised of 9 members including one Silverback and just recently the family grew by 2 members with the birth of twins in March. When we arrived at this family they were for the most part having their siesta but shortly after our arrival the younger ones started playing and some resumed their bamboo breakfast. This female was not particularly interested in anything else but finding her own little secluded spot to endulge in a hearty breakfast of bamboo shoots.
Equipment: Nikon D3s, Nikkor 70-200mm

What a glorious photo-the female is the picture of contentment in what might be her version of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám’s “a loaf of bread, a jug of wine…” and a hunka hunka of bamboo. Thanks for sharing!

What an experience! Beautiful shot. I love the lighting. She looks very content with her breakfast, though she might be thinking that bacon would go nicely with the meal LOL. Thank you for sharing

Thanks so much everyone, really appreciate all the comments.
David, I was filthy from heads to toe every day after being in the forest, was very muddy and I remembered to take a photo of my shoes which took a good beating
