Falls of Fire
by Nikhil Shahi
Every year for a few days in the month of February, the sun's angle is such, that it lights up Horsetail Falls in Yosemite, as if it were on fire. It truly is an amazing experience and one that I was fortunate to witness this year.
Equipment: Nikon D700, Nikon 70-200 VRII

Wow… I too thought it was lava at first glance. I don’t understand, tho, from where exactly is the sun light coming ? It’s an amazing shot!!!

Hi all,
Thanks for the great feedback. I really appreciate it. To answer a few questions:
a) This phenomenon takes place in the 3rd and 4th weeks of February in a given year. For it to occur, there has to have been sufficient snowmelt (for the falls to flow) and the setting sun should not be obscured by clouds. The day I took this shot was completely cloudy and i had lost hope of capturing this event. But then 10 mins before sunset, magic happened – the setting sun peeked through the clouds and lit up the falls.
b) Amy, the falls are being backlit by the setting sun – hence they take on this amazing golden color.
