Volcano Eruption

by Orvaratli

Yes, as you might know there is another eruption in Iceland. This time it is the remote Grimsvotn caldera erupting. It erupts every 5 years recently. Usually small and short lived eruptions. Now its been 7 years since last eruption and this one is HUGE!! The plume reaches 20km in height. The place is in the most middle of nowhere one can be in Iceland in a center of a large ice cap. Access is hard, one needs to have a big 4x4 to get there. Airplanes can go close because the ash cloud reaches into all directions with alot of lightning activity. Those on the ground near the volcano risk been zapped by one of them. Me and Gunnar Gestur went north Sprengisandur. We were about 60-70km from the eruption but we still had to look up to see the top of the plume.

(thanks to “your” volcano, air traffic here in Europe risks to be blocked … :-) )

Awesome, gorgeous, fantastic, spectacular, utterly pretty… Do you need more adjectives to describe this huge and fantastic spectacle of Mother Nature in this lovely country?

Your picture describes very well the situation and has also a very good sense of composition and aesthetic.

Örvar, congrats on this outstanding shot and your adventures spirit going there! I would have loved to join this trip. It seems I need to sit on packed equipment jumping the next plane once Iceland becomes alive from underneath! Keep on going for such beautiful shots – but please be careful – this beauty kills easiliy as you described it!
All the best,
Christian.

I heard of the volcano erupting and immediately thought of you. I eagerly awaited your superb shots, somehow knowing you would venture there and share with us again your sense of adventure and the awesome show from Mother Nature.

Thank you for both the photo, and the story. You have this knack of bringing it so ALIVE.

Congratulations on POD once again.
