The Refinery

by James Fougere

With a native guide, I was able to access the restricted areas of the reservation. Travelling in the pre-dawn darkness I was able to get to the Totem Pole sand dune location to capture the side light at sunrise. The clouds helped to diffuse the sunlight to create a warm atmosphere. This location reminded of a oil refinery, hence the title.
Equipment: Nikon D3s, 14-24mm lens, Gitzo Tripod

Way to go, James. You really deserved this one! One of the best Totem Pole renditions I have seen here and certainly the best lines and light on the dunes.

Well done James, beautiful shot! Very telling about today’s society is the way you say that an amazing natural phenomenon reminds you of an “oil refinery” …

Just beautiful and much kinder to the environment than an actual refinery.

Really beautiful! I prefer to think of it as a castle in the sand.

Magnificent! I thought at first, from the small view, it really was a refinery!

The sand comes at you like a river in impressive tones of brown, creating a respectful distance for the structure set in the back. Love the play of blue and brown, sky and earth.

Delightful colors and great DOF – thanks for sharing this unique and somewhat inaccessible place with us in your beautiful image.

I love the colors and how the lines in the sand and the clouds draw your eye to the stone momuments. Beautiful :o )

I only called it “The Refinery” for it’s resemblance to one, put glad it is a beautiful sculpture carved over geological time. Thanks for all the comments :)
