The Celestial Equator
by Luis Argerich
The Celestial Equator is the place between the celestial north and south poles so the stars seem to travel in a straight line. In this photo the south celestial pole is towards the top left of the image while the north celestial pole is below the horizon towards the bottom right side. Taken at Somuncura, Rio Negro, Argentina
Equipment: Canon 5dII, Nikon 14-24mm

I wonder: before you made this image, did you have this vision in your head and did the vision and the final image do each other justice? I ask, because imagining such an image and then making it happen is like a miracle to me and something I hope to one day accomplish. This is such a spectacular creation. Such flawless beauty!

Thank you for the nice comments.
I really appreciate them.
Thanks to the editors for choosing this photo for today. Big honor.
@Anna: Yes, I planned the shot. It was a 4 bights trip to a very dark sky location and one of the things I wanted was to photograph the celestial equator over the lagoon or a volcano. (Lagoon it was)
II didn’t plan for the weather, there was no wind and that helped me smooth the water.
Nancy

It’s amazing how much light is produced by stars. I love the reflection in the water. Wonderful photo! Great colors too.
