Rock Candy
by Stephen Oachs
Deep in the remote Escalante Grand Staircase Wilderness you can find some of the most unique and dramatic examples of mother nature's handy work. Sitting silent in this largely unexplored region, this little two-foot tall rock is merely a "taste" of the many geological delights and oddities waiting to be explored.
In this capture, the smooth, flowing and linear striations lead the eye, like a path in Candy Land, winding gracefully across the landscape, whetting our appetite for more of this stunning rock-taffy. Leading us along a rainbow path in search of that mythic pot of gold....
Equipment: Canon 1Ds Mark III

I have been up the Escalante many times at Lake Powell. Beautiful striation of the sandstone. I’ve never seen rock that pink before, though; it’s usually much more of an orange hue.
