Hidden Beauty

by Pranabesh Das

The photo was taken at Bholaganj, Sylhet, Bangladesh. The boy is the son of a stone-collector. He was there wandering around collecting stones with his mother. The picture shows not only the hardship of the people who earn their living in such ways but also the suppressed and neglected childhood of the children of those families.

Beautifully captured black and white! He’s a happy beautiful boy and most likely unaware of his poverty living the only life he knows.

I disagree that his childhood is neglected – if he makes a game out of collecting stones and is friends with lots of other kids in the community who he is always around, then he might actually be a happy little child, as the picture suggests.

Nice tones in this portrait.

monochrome certainly makes this extra special. clear crisp capture with good DoF. added to that the well managed light and it all makes for a wonderful image indeed. compliments

What a beautiful portrait. I think that this kind of strong pictures can only be made in B&W, it gives them this extra and tells the story so much better. This kid looks happy indeed, and you captured him so perfect. Great exposure too.

His parents obviously love him and are working hard to provide for him. The problem is economics; part of the world (a smaller part than we in the west think) is rich and everyone else is desperately poor and the average person can do nothing about that. This picture shows that sometimes money doesn’t necessarily have much to do with happiness.

Agree with some of the other responses, what makes you think he is neglected? Because a family is poor (I’m assuming in the financial sense – which is all relative anyway). Perhaps there is more to this story that you haven’t told us. From the photo he looks to be in good health and looks to be very happy.

Regardless, great shot Pranabesh.

The child is SMILING. He seems more alive than some of the
spoiled, computer addicted kids in hte US. I too collectied rocks by
the bucket for a few days when we planted a new lawn. Poverty is
challenging but this child’s spirit does not look broken. Great shot!

Despite his hardship, I see joy and wonder in his face. That’s what makes this such a magnificent photo…..Thanks for sharing !

First let me say your photo is amazing. It is so sharp and clear and is amazing in black and white. Second, I’m sorry, but I think you should change your caption of your photo. This child looks quite happy and content. His way of life may not be particularly easy, but he seems no worse for the wear. I don’t agree that your “picture shows hardship.” Quite the contrary.

The photo is wonderful! But I to have to agreed with most of the comments. This little boy represents what true life should be about…..happiness – it is that simple. I know many people with money that never have such a true and enduring smile. Makes me want to go rock collecting with him and be a child again. Thank you for the photo!

Did anyone tell him he is poor and neglected? Can’t tell by his beautiful and captivating smile. Wonderful photo.

Great hat!
I forgot what a smile might look like when a child is free
from the violence of tv, the drone of video games, the anger in music…
This reminds me.

You’ve created a beautiful portrait of this boy – congratulations!

This boy is the hope for the future. Wonderful capture!

A beautiful image of a beautiful child.

A terrific image, and you have certainly inspired debate and critical thinking with your image, which I think is a good thing. It seems to me that you have not said the child is neglected, but that his childhood is – I’m assuming by having to help provide for the family income. It is wonderful to have such a peek into a life that is so different than most of us experience. And his smile is what it’s all about! Whatever his circumstances, his bright spirit shines through in your wonderful shot!

his youthful smile is innocent of poverty. how i wish i could go back to my childhood with him.

I am not much for portrait photography, but this is very well done, the processing is exceptional!

14th May 2011 at 9:06 pm

Let’s just say that I wouldn’t want any of my American grandsons to change places with him. He is a beautiful child, no doubt about that!

Great shot, but it is sad that in 2011 many people are still suffering from poverty.Yet we can feel the innocence of this child.
