Burmese Fishermen

by David Lazar

Three fisherman on Inle Lake, Myanmar. The fisherman of this region have a unique rowing technique, where they stand on the stern on one leg and wrap the other leg around the oar allowing for fine paddle control. This way they can precisely steer around thick vegetation which often appears on the lake. It also keeps one had free for using nets. These fishermen successfully live off the land and its natural resources, without using motor propelled boats.
Equipment: Nikon D700

Fishermen in the photo are fishermen from Inle lake, a high-plateau lake. That is a lakie in Shan State, a high plateau state.Other fishermen from Myanmar are almost the same that of fishermen all around the world, that is they use their hand to row the boat rather than foot as in the picture. Using foot to row the boat is a unique tradition. Only in two places I had seen fishermen use foot rather than hand to row the boat. One is in Africa, regret I’m not specific, The other one is in Shan Plateau, Union of Myanmar as you see in the picture.

The rowing looks awkward, but the image is very nice! Thanks for telling us about it!

Hi Wanda – awkward for you or me – but for these guys it’s as graceful as the dance Angela suggests… they smoothly get around the lake with this rather bizarre rowing technique.

What a fascinating photo. Not only a great compositionm , but it pictures a way
of life so unfamiliar to most of us.

Masters of balance!

IDK if this is taboo or not, but I was wondering how that photograph was captured? Was there a fill flash camera left? Was there a lot of post involved?

(Sorry for my naive question. Just trying to learn)

Looks nice but as a practicing photographer of 50 years who knows Inle lake and it’s fishermen well this image has either been ‘set up’ which I do not really think or it’s a manipulation of more than one image, if that is the case it has been very well done !

19th May 2011 at 12:38 am

Lovely image. Really like the colours and the perspective.

19th May 2011 at 3:29 am

Chris M – yes I asked the fishermen to arrange themselves in this position and look out into the distance, so it is posed. Meanwhile I was balancing on a similar type of boat rocking side to side and being held to keep steady and not fall into the lake!

Very interesting; thanks for sharing this one.

A master image.
In its composition and rhythm reminds me of some works of Cartier Bresson.
Congratulations on your work.
