Riverdance

by Arild Heitmann

A fantastic display when the aurora erupted over the dark landscape. It turned the surrounding landscape into a green wonderland. This was a fairly long exposure (40 secs) where i covered the sky with a black card for the majority of the exposure and then revealed the sky for a few seconds. This made the landscape so bright and surreal... Troms, Norway
Equipment: canon 5d, 17-40mmL

Arild Heitmann, 33 year old landscapephotographer from Northern Norway. I was born and raised practically in the woods and the mountains. I`ve spent my entire life out in the wild, but it wasnt until 2008 that i started taking pictures on my adventures. This new interest quickly turned into something deeper and meaningful when i realized that i was able to get people to realize the incredible beauty that surrounds us in our daily life. Now i spend most of my time out in nature, constantly searching for new and inspirational scenes. One of my main projects are to shoot the magical Aurora Borealis in a way that most photographers seem to forget. To show it in its true beauty as part of a greater landscape.

Hi, I’m reading the ‘His Dark Materials’ trilogy by Phillip Pullman (a must read if you haven’t already) This is exactly the image I had in my head when he talks about the aurora in the first book! Amazing, well done and is now my wallpaper!

Arild, thank you for sharing your awesome, unique photo of the green aurora borealis! Beauty is indeed all around us if we know how to look for it. I have always been fascinated by the aurora, but never witnessed one since I have not traveled far enough North. That is definitely on my to-do list now.

Arild,
I work with this nice and tricky technique too since my travel with Örvar from Iceland.
Your image is just awesome, I love the ice within the stream topped by just some snow
and the river itself looks like glowing quicksilver … congrats to this very deserved POTD!
You belong to these photographers that guarantee perfect shots whereever they go!

Greetings,

Hei Arild!
