Milky Way over Maui
by Richard Peters
I spent 6 days on the stunning Hawaiian island of Maui trying to photograph the Milky Way. With so little light pollution it really was an awe inspiring sight to see it stretch out across the night sky along with the millions of other stars. However, I spent most of the week thwarted by cloud cover, and it was only on the final night that I got my best chance. I used a torch to illuminate the rocks and waves during the 30 second exposure, as I wanted something in the foreground to help give context to the sky. The small light on the horizon is a lighthouse and just above it, a shooting star can be seen streaking across the sky. You can find out more about this photograph on my blog.

I am a photographer living in London. My preferred subject is wildlife and I always look forward to the next time I can get out of the city and explore not just the UK, but when I can, other parts of the world.

Amazing! Far more stars where you were than we see in the UK, and to see the Milky Way is something else altogether.

Oh why oh why do we need so much light? I do miss a sky full of stars. This is a tremendous shot. ‘Everything comes to he who waits’.

Glory! Nothing like a clear sky. I kid the neighbors here, tell them if the stupid yard lights disappear they can blame me – Only a few neighbors and they all have those horrid bright street lights!
You caught the MW in all its glory for real. Awesome.

That’s a beautiful photo. Before the trees grew and covered the best part of the sky for watching the Milky Way, I used to lay out on my deck at night in awe of this marvelous sight.

Excellent use of your shutter speed. The density of the stars is fantastic. Lighting the rocks for context is brilliant.
