Magic Waterfall

by ForestWander

20 - 30 Second long exposures bring the small slow moving whirlpool below these beautiful waterfalls to life. A scenic footbridge crosses the top of the falls fed by shay run. This little stream feeds into the massive Blackwater river gorge far below. Elakala Waterfall, Blackwater Falls State Park.
Equipment: Canon 5d Mark II

My son and I have hiked hundreds of miles in the West Virginia Mountains since he was 4 years old in 2004. We have taken pictures of some of the most beautiful places you could ever imagine. I have lived in Weest Virginia most of my life but it was only once my son and I began exploring the forests that we realized why our home is called "Almost Heaven".

Wonderful work! It’s really magic! Love the long exposure that makes the movement of the water so milky!

Stunning image……really beautiful work!

I never cease to be amazed by such beautiful places as this. Whether this is truly natural, or it is managed by man, makes little difference. I believe that nature’s hand has the largest percentage of the creative force within it, and man was put on earth to take care of and improve on it. Often man strips away his best assets for the sake of money and we lose the health benefits that such beauty provides for us, both in a physical sense as well as spiritually. Thank you for sharing this image. For a large amount of people, it is the only way they can experience such beauty.

i hope all of us will post a picture without editing it… so we can show the real nature around us…..

2nd March 2011 at 4:39 pm

Exquisite and amazing! Congratulations for a well deserved POTD!
@ Jared, rarely does a digital camera expose a scene with this much movement and as many shadows, and gradations of colour, exactly as the eye sees it.
This scene is heartstopping in it’s Natural beauty! I can see the swirl of the waters and feel and hear the rush of the falls. Excellent work ForestWander!
