Lightning at Delicate Arch
by Robert Beideman
A stunning electrical storm marches across Canyonlands toward Delicate Arch just after dusk this past October. Arches National Park.

All too often, we're surrounded by the day-to-day of our daily lives. Hopefully...at least once in a while...we each escape this to reconnect with the real world that we live in...the world of mountains, oceans, fire, and fresh air.
And, even more rarely, these escapes lead us to a moment...a particular place and time...where the majesty of the natural world around us comes together in a way that leaves us completely awestruck.
If, at those moments, we're fortunate enough to have a camera with us...it's most common to come away with images of that moment that scarcely reflect the magnitude of what was actually seen with our own eyes. We certainly try...but the images typically captured are but pointers for the brain to remember what was experienced in vivid color...and such images are only useful to those who have actually lived the particular experience.
I strive to capture images that can convey such intense moments of beauty to those who hadn't the chance to experience the particular place and time themselves. As is usual, I’m a work in progress...but...aren't we all?

Is it any wonder a high percentage of landscape shots are taken in the American southwest? Among the most beautiful regions of the planet–hands down!! Brilliant photo, Robert…on a myriad of levels, not the least of which is its depiction of a world in constant flux…life finds a way…Thank you!!

Nice capture; I would have cropped the foreground a little in order to bring the lightning closer.

Beautiful shot. Your comments are perfectly true. I’ve had a few amazing experiences like this and my limited skills don’t seem to help anyone but myself. You, however, have the skills.

Masterly catch of the awesomeness of our world!

I really like the different angle of Delicate Arch. We usually only see it from one angle, so this is nice, and the lightning makes it a fantastic shot.

A fresh perspective on an icon. Your exposure/blend looks excellent. – You captured a rare moment when everything seemed to line up perfectly. I might sugesting a slightly tighter crop off the bottom and left to bring the view closer to the lightning storm. Fantastic anyway you look at it!
