Winter’s Grip

by Ian Plant

Icy fingers reach toward sunset on the tranquil shores of Lake Michigan. I carefully probed the ice with an ice axe to make sure it would support my weight before venturing to the water's edge. To learn more about the story behind this image, please visit my photoblog.

Beautiful colors! I love the clouds and how symetrical the ice looked – they almost appear to be ice docks.

This is just too wonderful! It must have been almost sad to lose the magnificent scene when the sun set!

Amazing how we all see something different…to me it looked like a white bear paw. Yes, Ian you have captured the moment. The sky reminds me of our sunsets top of one of the mountains along the Maine coast where I live…only with a little more aqua and yellow blend in the colors.

Ian,

Beautiful. Your title is so apropos! The colors are magnificent and the sunset is made even more dramatic with the colors echoed in the snow. The image here is close to my heart. In winter I view similarly glorious sunsets from my cottage on Lake Huron’s eastern shore. The pinks and blues are phenomenal, as your photo documents. Thanks for this.

Oh, my, this is stunning! Just stunning. It took me a couple seconds to notice the sun sparkle but I think it’s my favorite part–hard to say in this most glorious photo. Thanks, Ian
