Winter Sunrise
by Stefan Mendelsohn
Saxon Switzerland, Germany
The weather forecast for today's morning sounded very promising - bright sky with only a few cirrostratus and early high fog. And during the last week we had a little snowfall. So I expected to find everything I would need for some beautiful landscape compositions at the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
I decided to wake up early this morning for photographing the beautiful sandstone rocks with the golden light of a winter sunrise. When I arrived I was looking for a nice scenery. But the windchill factor was below -12 deg C and it was hard to keep my fingers warm.
Saxon Switzerland is a mountainous climbing area and national park around the Elbe valley south-east of Dresden in Saxony, Germany. Together with the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic it forms the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The scale is so deceptive it’s amazing. I don’t know if it’s an aqueduct or train trestle but it looks like a toy – didn’t even notice it for about a minute. Makes me want to go there!

Wow this is stunning! This would make a very nice poster print! Very nice composition. Is that a train bridge I see or a pedestrian bridge?

Amazing light and great how the rocks are covered with all the snow. The small bridge to the mountain is great to see. Beautifull shot.

Every individual mountain range in the world has its own character. This one reminds me of something from a fantasy film. Beautifully photographed; well done.

The more I stare at the rock formations, the more images I can imagine; It’s fascinating!

@Melissa S: This is a small pedestrian bridge.
