Firestorm

by David Richter

California’s coast is usually covered in a thick marine layer during the summer which makes colorful sunsets a very rare event. After three months of continuously checking weather reports and tide schedules, the fog lifted and the sky exploded in the most amazing colors, while rain showers pounded on the naturally formed rock bridge at Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz, California.
Equipment: Canon Rebel XSi, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Hoya circular polarizer and Singh-Ray 3-stop hard-edge GND

Hi David,
I have lots of photos of Natural Bridges from the 70′s before most were destroyed by time and a huge storm. I took them for granted all my life not thinking they would disappear. I haven’t lived there for a long time and I miss it terribly. I live in the Pacific NW now- which has it’s own beauty but I miss the smell of the spray and the Redwoods. I grew up in Boulder Creek. I see there is a lone bridge now. I’m glad I have the photos I do and I have them with beautiful dark storms and wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Thanks for bringing back the memories. This is a wonderful photo!

I live less than an hour from Natural Bridges and you have inspired me to go back this weekend and take some photos! Your image is spectacular and I can only hope I will ever manage to take one as good as this!

Thanks everyone!

Alex, taking it all back.

Mo, you’re very welcome. Sorry to hear about the destroyed images of yours but it’s the moments spent with friends and family at a beach like that, that you’ll never forget and treasure forever.

Stephen, you know it! It’s my own 12mpx version of a fantastic summer.

Jacqueline, thank you. That’s the biggest accolade one can receive, inspiring someone to go out and experience the natural beauty that’s just out there to be visited and enjoyed.
