Badlands in Bloom

by Guy Tal

Every few years, for a few fleeting days, when conditions are just right, these otherwise arid lands burst into color with carpets of flowering Scorpionweed and Beeplant. Caineville, Utah.

I am a photographer, writer, and naturalist living and working in the Colorado Plateau - a scenic and diverse desert region of the western United States spanning an area larger than most countries and states. Over the years, this magical and endangered landscape had not only been my home but also my sanctuary and my main source of inspiration. It is my goal as a person, as a writer, and as an artist, to promote and to share its wild beauty, and advocate for its preservation. It is a place like no other - a treasure for the soul that future generations deserve to experience in its wild state as we have been privileged to.

How can anyone not believe that there is a Higher Power making all this beauty…and the gift he has given Guy in being able to visualize and take these photos. Excellent job Guy and thank you for sharing.

I saw something similar on the volcanic island of Tenerife in the Canary islands. The flowers there as I remember were more red and a bit taller. The locals told me it was a 20 year event. This is a beautiful photograph with amazing clarity. You are a master photographer Thank you for sharing it with us..

Wonderful Guy. I love the symmetry and the subtle color in the clouds almost as if they’re reflecting the flowers.

Oh wow, I would love to see close ups of these heroic plants. I like the way you have matched the sky to the color of the flowers.

To see such life in a place that is normally an arid moonscape is nothing short of astonishing. What a treat. Thanks!!

Wonderful frame, Guy! The little golden glowing islands of contrast in the sheer amount of purple goodness, is what sets this image apart from the rest. Nicely done, Sir!

This is magic, it reminds me of the Namaqualand region in South Africa where this happens if the winter rains are plentiful. It is a wonderful capture, bravo!
