Sandstone Worlds

by Chikku Baiju

This shot was unexpected. I was leaving the viewpoint after I shot the sunrise, and saw this tree as I was leaving. To my luck the tree had a hole letting me make that sunstar. My intention for this trip was to get a unique shot from this well photographed place, and I hope I succeeded. Monument Valley

Well done sir. Today’s nature photography scene seems content to retake the same pictures of the same places with ever more expensive equipment. Way to bring a creative eye to a classic locale.

Oh, yes, you succeeded! The aerial perspective is outstanding, and also helps to create beautiful eye movement through the scene, leading back to the focal point, the starburst tree, which again points us to the foreground, which leads us to the monuments, and on. I also love the contrast between the ethereal sky and distant monuments and the snow covered foreground. Wish I was there!

Coming from the UK it is sometimes hard to appreciate the wildness of America’s National Parks.
There is so much photography coming out of these places these days that to get a unique shot must be a nightmare. As beautiful as these areas are, I have come to see many of them as more or less a bit of a cliché. Not so with this image however. You have captured a bleakness that expresses the spiritual solitude of the place, making the viewer want to step into the picture to explore more. Well done.

You certainly succeeded. This is beautiful and unique. Not the typical Monument Valley shot. Well done!

This is a great shot, well done!

Sometimes when we plan a famous location shot (sunrise or sunset), wait for the right moment/ light and perfection….but it seems to “miss” something.

This is what I call a “gift”….a shot of a lifetime that is unexpected, and you get lucky as you walk away, or look at it from an unusual angle, nature and luck deliver and you are blessed!

Didn’t know it snowed in monument Valley, so you’ve taken me completely by surprise. I agree it is a beautifully shot landscape with all the right ingredients. That lone bent tree trunk, even in death, majestic and humble. Thank you for taking our eyes on such a journey, thank you for being our eyes on your journey.

The best shots are usually the ones we tend to overlook. Good eye. Thank you for sharing.

Chikku,

Another masterful shot. I am still enjoying your image of the cascading sand. The vista here, sense of depth and distance is so beautifully accomplished. Congrats on another.

This is SOOOOO awesome. This is such an amazing pic. The red Sandstone really contrasts with the snow in the early morning sunshine. I love earth shots. It is like the best website ever.
