Relentless Force

by Orvarati

Exploring Iceland in this coldest and darkest period of the year reveals some very interesting scenery. The light is soft throughout the short day and combined with stormy weather it creates dramatic scenes like this on a frozen lagoon of Svinafellsjokull glacier. This interesting ice formation is where the ice shelf of the frozen lagoon gets pushed over a small iceberg by the advancing glacier. Standing on the ice we could constantly hear cracks as the ice is pushed millimeter by millimeter be the relentless force of the glacier behind me. The dramatic sky was formed by very strong northern winds that earlier in the day reduced our visibility to 50m by blowing ash when driving by Eyjafjallajokull volcano.

Thank you for an awe inspiring story to accompany this wonderful image.
You take us there and we stand with you on the edge and tremble at the cracks but know we are quite safe and marvel once again at the powerful beauty of our wonderful planet.

The contrast is so dramatic and the linear ice cracks are the perfect complement to the undulating silhouette of mountain in the background. Beautiful. Thanks.
