Black Rhino

by Skyhawk Photography

Like some kind of prehistoric creature molded from the earth itself, this enormous male Black Rhino emerged out of the golden grasslands to come and drink at a waterhole in the Etosha National Park in Northern Namibia The endangered Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis bicornis). Only 2000 of these magnificent creatures are said to still roam free in Africa. Their numbers continue to dwindle as they are poached for traditional Asian medicine and for dagger handles in Yemen and Oman. Based in Johannesburg South Africa, Jan and Jay Roode are passionate aviators, photographers, travellers and conservationists. Having collectively travelled to over 56 countries this couple are modern day nomads and seem content only when free to wander the skies in their Jabiru 430 or explore life on the ground in their trusty Landcruiser. Inspired by the adventure of life and with a deep reverence for freedom and spirit they try to capture images that invoke an emotional and spiritual response to the wonders of this world. The animals and landscapes of Africa have always held a deep fascination for them and with this fascination has come a heartfelt desire to show how many parts of Africa; its animals and its landscapes are under dire threat. Their photos not only document a vanishing world but hope to inspire people to want to get involved in conservation efforts. Their photographs populate many image banks and have been used in publications such as Science News, African Pilot, SA Flyer, Africa Birds and Birding, in brochures for lodges such as World Wildlife Fund Travel and TAU Game Lodge, on websites such as eBucks, SA Venues and Planet Earth and in promotional material for BirdLife South Africa. Recently one of their photos graced a book cover entitled Meerkats by a UK author Jodi Sullivan Rake.

My thoughts and prayers goes out for these wonderful creatures and that the poachers who harm any living thing I hope that the book gets tossed at them and the most severe punishments are issued to the poachers.

Fabulous image of this wonderful creature! A sad story that these, and so many others, are endangered.

Gorgeous creature image! I love the colour in this fabulous monotone of God’s creation.
It’s a disgrace that poachers will kill these gorgeous creature for something as horrible as dagger handles…
