Lost Soul

by Marc Adamus

Amazing this lone Cottonwood endures here, alone in a pool of water that has created a small pocket, deep in the sandstone. I photographed the old veteran of the rock one morning amidst a tremendously vibrant sunrise. The colors of dawn reflected powerfully off everything. There was no color adjustment to the file here except for slight shifts towards blue/cyan applied to the stone. The image is a result of two exposures to control dynamic range.
Equipment: Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon 14-24 with V3 adapter

This is simply breath taking.
I love the desert regions of the US as well as the outback of Australia which I visited years ago.
Would you please let us know where this shot was taken???
Thanks so much.

Thanks all. I’m honored you find this image to be moving. I must mention, the great inspiration Guy Tal gives me and so many other photographers who have photographed this region. New images from my recent travels are up on my website today.

“Lost Soul”
Interesting title. Perfect really.
This is one of the most thought-provoking photos that I’ve seen.
The muddy mauves of the rock and clouds is broken only by the promise in that thin ribbon of yellow light and narrow glimpse of blue sky.
Very unique.

Marc…i saved this as my desktop pic and I have to tell you I was mesmerized ALL DAY. and the wierd thing was, as the day progressed the colours started to become deeper and deeper, as if the sun was going down, rather than coming up. If there was one place I would wish to be for the last hours of my life…this is it. Is is truely the best photograph I have seen this year and I just want to thank you for sharing this scene with us all at earthscape.
