Cathedral in the Desert
by John Mumaw
The only cottonwood tree for miles around is nurtured and protected from a harsh environment by the cool, moist soil found in this unique, teardrop shaped sandstone alcove on the Utah/Arizona borderlands.
The hours I spent in here waiting for the light were one of the finer moments of my life.

Beatiful photo. Indeed a cathedral–and gothic at that! Hard to fathom how many have a hard time seeing beauty and meaning in the world. It is out there. Thank you.

How very beautiful on so many levels, but I’d like to highlight the spiritual force I sensed when I saw the rock protecting and nurturing the tree.

Great image. I would have love to be there to share that moment when the light arrived.

PS The title of the photo is perfect as well.
Maybe it’s just me, but if you look at the sandstone on the inside upper left of the “window of light”, there appears to be an oval face (abstract) in the stone and below that a pair of praying hands . No wonder you picked up a chapel-like feel in this “cathedral.” It is as if a woman is looking down or praying on knees towards a symbolic tree “of life.” Spiritual force indeed.
