Aurora Explosion

by Orvar Atli

This photo was from Easter day this year in Pingvellir national park. The Aurora wasn't that active. Just a vague thin green layer in the sky. A larger aperture, high iso long exposure revealed what the eye could not see so clearly. It is sometimes difficult to really say how active or visible the aurora really was when seeing a picture of it. It is often the less active aurora that is more picture friendly because like any other bright source of light at night, a very active Aurora can easily be over exposed compared with the foreground. The orange glow near the horizon is the light pollution of Reykjavik some 35km away. Often city light is unwanted in night shots but I liked this one as it looks like an explosion which the Aurora burst out from. It is my wife posing on the edge of the peer, illuminated by a handheld flash light.

I love it! Wonderful composition, doesn’t matter that the eye didn’t see it this way. Love what the camera saw.

Fantastic.
The proportion that the person brings to the scene and the perfect frame makes the northern lights in a huge light show.
My sincere congratulations.

Nicely done; you put a lot of thought into this shot and it really paid off.

Örvar,
congrats on this great shot!
Its true – the faint aurora makes the perfect shot as long exposures are possible. Such situations call for tracking of the stars!

All the best,
Christian.

Orvaratli, thanks for another extraordinary Iceland sky photo. And thanks to Gunnar for writing in Icelandic (?) , which I had never seen other than in street signs – I did get the “Kaeri” part :)
